Anxious airline passengers, especially those who are worried about turbulence, should aim to sit closer to the front of the plane.
That, according to several reports and airplane pilots, is the best place to sit if turbulence triggers anxiety. 
Tens of millions of people took off for a trip during Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start to the summer travel season. The surge in travelers last weekend foreshadowed how busy this summer will be at airports nationwide.
SINGAPORE AIRLINES PASSENGER DEAD AFTER BOEING JET HITS 'SEVERE TURBULENCE'
Earlier this month, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced it is prepared for a record number of passengers at airport security checkpoints nationwide. 
The TSA said it will expect to screen more than 3 million passengers nationwide in a single day at some point this summer for the first time ever. 
While flying is safe, the recent incident involving a Singapore Airlines flight that had to make an emergency landing in Bangkok following "severe turbulence" has sparked heightened awareness on the dangers of turbulence. 
THESE ARE THE FLIGHT ROUTES WITH THE MOST TURBULENCE
Weather.gov describes turbulence as "one of the most unpredictable of all the weather phenomena that are of significance to pilots."   
To date, more than 25 million adults in the U.S. have a fear of flying, otherwise known as aerophobia, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It can range from mild, where people may become anxious, to severe. In severe cases, people may refuse to fly for years, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Certain experiences could trigger this fear, including, though not limited to, news stories about terrorism, crashes or violence on airplanes as well as turbulence. 
To help nervous fliers, an airline pilot, Jimmy Nicholson, posted a video on TikTok explaining that passengers sitting in the front of the plane will experience less turbulence given that the rear of the aircraft will swing more. 
It's not something American Airlines pilot Capt. Dennis Tajer has heard people talk about a lot, though he agreed that "often the ride in the back of the airplane feels less stable but depending on the movement of the air, the ride may feel different." 
Sitting near the wings can also help.

"The wings are more closely located to the center of gravity of the airplane, therefore, the ride while sitting near the wings may feel less turbulent than near the tail of the aircraft where vertical input is felt the most," Tajer added. 
Still, David Slotnick, The Points Guy senior aviation business reporter, noted how the "difference is mostly for more mild turbulence, and can be helpful if you get anxious or motion sickness."
Regardless of where you sit, "having your seat belt on will be the difference between safety or injury. It's just that simple," Tajer said.

Jeep unveiled its first electric SUV this week, joining the hotly contested segment, along with other manufacturers such as Hyundai, GM, Kia, and Honda. 
The new Wagoneer S, which will go on sale this fall, shares little with its gas-powered namesake, the Wagoneer. The EV utilizes the same architecture as the upcoming Dodge Charger EV. The starting price tag will come in at $72,000.

Jeep Wagoneer S Launch Edition will feature a 600hp engine that can do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds. Jeep says the 100.5 kWh battery will give the SUV a range of 300 miles. 
The EV market has faced some turmoil recently. Still elevated prices and higher interest rates have put the cost of higher end EVs out of reach for many Americans.

Hybrids accounted for 9.3% of new light vehicle registrations in the U.S. from January to November 2023, outstripping those of EVs by 1.8 percentage points, according to S&P Global Mobility data.
Moody said recently, that buyers like hybrids because they are relatively affordable and get great gas mileage. At the same time, hybrids work with existing infrastructure and require less time for refueling than an EV.

A lawsuit filed against the wildly popular "Shark Tank" phenomenon, Poppi prebiotic soda, alleges that the drink was not as "gut healthy" as it's advertised to be.
Plaintiff Kristin Cobbs of San Francisco filed the class action lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of herself and "similarly situated" consumers of Poppi against the parent company, VNGR Beverage LLC, which is based in Austin, Texas.
Poppi has quickly climbed the ranks in the beverage world - capitalizing on relevant marketing and scoring shelf-space at popular retailers like Whole Foods, Target and Costco.
Poppi's "gut healthy" promises are false since the soda "only contains two grams of prebiotic fiber, an amount too low to cause meaningful gut health benefits," the plaintiffs claimed.
"Accordingly, a consumer would need to drink more than four Poppi sodas in a day to realize any potential health benefits from its prebiotic fiber," the lawsuit claimed.
"However, even if a consumer were to do this, Poppi's high sugar content would offset most, if not all, of these purported gut health," they added.
Cobbs said that she "reasonably relied" on Poppi's promise of gut healthy soda and decided to pay the "substantial price premium."
"Ms. Cobbs, however, did not receive the benefit of her bargains because the Products did not, in fact, contain enough 'prebiotics' to achieve any meaningful 'gut health,'" the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit also cited studies that showed consuming too much agave inulin - the type of prebiotic found in Poppi - can actually have adverse health effects.
"Likewise, Ms. Cobbs was unaware that excessive consumption of the Products could negatively impact her health," it added.
The lawsuit "demands" a trial by jury, claiming that Poppi falsely advertised the health benefits of their products.

A man from Pennsylvania turned a pit stop in Maryland into quite the payoff when he won more than $160,000 in the lottery. 
"I had Memorial Day on my mind as I was driving through Laurel," the man, a financial planner from Philadelphia, told the Maryland Lottery in a May 31 news article posted on their website. 
Laurel is located between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.

On that day, May 23, the man remembered that he had been invited to a friend's party that weekend, and thought it would be polite to bring beverages.
"At that moment, I saw the liquor store," he told the Maryland Lottery. 
The man said he often visits Maryland, and when he's there, he frequently buys lottery tickets. 
After stopping at the liquor store in Laurel, he bought a "FAST PLAY" ticket. 
A "FAST PLAY" game is "like scratch-offs, without the scratching," said the Maryland Lottery's website. 
WASHINGTON EDUCATOR WINS $200,000 JACKPOT AFTER TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
"I've been having luck with FAST PLAY tickets down here (in Maryland) and Big Money Doubler had a pretty big jackpot the last time I checked your website," the man told the Maryland Lottery when he collected his winnings. 
"Big Money Doubler," the game the man played, costs $5 per play, and has a progressive jackpot, meaning it gets bigger until someone wins. 
Despite being a lottery enthusiast, the man did not think about checking his numbers until later that evening. 
When he saw that he won, and how much he won - $162,411 - he could not believe it.

"I was in total disbelief when I saw the prize amount. I called my girlfriend, my friends - nobody could believe it," he told the Maryland Lottery.

The Big Money Doubler game began selling tickets in Jan. 2023, according to the Maryland Lottery, and the game will close after 10 more progressive jackpots are won.

American Airlines kicked off its D-Day 80th anniversary trip to Normandy, France, with 70 World War II veterans on Friday at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
The veterans enjoyed a kickoff dinner Thursday night at American Airlines headquarters in Forth Worth, Texas, before their AA flight to Paris, and took part in a parade to the airport on Friday afternoon.
The veterans were sent off with an address from actor and founder of the partnering group, Gary Sinise of the Gary Sinise Foundation, and other volunteers and supporters from across the U.S.

"We're honored to play a part in helping this group of heroic veterans return to Normandy," American Airlines COO David Seymour said in a statement.

Among the 70 veterans selected for the trip was Frank J. Perry Sr., who served in the Army as an aerial gunner in Europe in 1945.
Perry joined Piedmont Airlines post-war to continue his dreams of aviation and served there for nearly 40 years. American Airlines is formed today by many heritage airlines like Piedmont.

FAA WON'T APPROVE INCREASED 737 MAX PRODUCTION IN NEAR FUTURE

When the veterans land in France, they will spend two days visiting Paris before commemorative events begin in Normandy.

Their program in Normandy will include "visits to key historical sites, concerts and special ceremonies to honor the courage and sacrifice of all who served during World War II," American Airlines said.
On the anniversary of D-Day itself, June 6, there will be a ceremony held at the Normandy American Cemetery. It is the first American cemetery on European soil for service members of World War II.
The oldest veteran onboard the chartered flight is 107-year-old former U.S. Merchant Marine Reynolds Tomter.

June 6 marks 80 years since American forces invaded the beaches of Normandy under operation code-named Neptune to liberate France. 
It remains the largest seaborne invasion in history.

German automaker Porsche on Tuesday unveiled the new 911 Carrera GTS which is the first street-legal 911 that uses a hybrid powertrain.
The hybrid sports car features a lightweight T-Hybrid system that features a newly-developed electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which was designed based on knowledge from motor racing. 
The integrated electric motor, which is between the compressor and turbine wheel, brings the turbocharger up to speed instantaneously and builds up boost pressure, while also functioning as a generator that can yield up to 11 kW of power that's extracted from the exhaust gas flow.
"We developed and tested a wide variety of ideas and approaches to arrive at the hybrid system that would suit the 911 perfectly," Frank Moser, Porsche vice president of model lines 911 and 718, said in a statement. "The result is a unique drive that fits into the overall concept of the 911 and significantly enhances its performance."
PORSCHE TO DEBUT NEW HYBRID 911 SPORTS CAR
Its boxer engine delivers 485 horsepower even without electrical assistance. In total, the system's output is 541 horsepower - 61 horsepower compared to its predecessor, which allows it to beat its predecessor to 100 kilometers per hour.
"The efficient performance hybrid achieves highly dynamic driving characteristics while at the same time reducing CO2 emissions with significantly less extra weight compared to plug-in hybrid vehicles," Porsche wrote in the announcement. 
The new 911 includes a fully digital instrument cluster for the first time ever. The company says the 12.6-inch display can be extensively customized and offers up to seven views, including an exclusive Classic display that's inspired by Porsche's traditional five-tube dial design with a central tachometer.

It also features a high-resolution 10.9-inch central display that's used to operate the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, which includes new connectivity features. A QR code simplifies the process of logging-on to the PCM with Porsche ID.
Apple CarPlay is more deeply integrated into the upgraded 911 and gives users the option of displaying information in the instrument cluster and enables the operation of vehicle functions in the Apple ecosystem, such as the Siri voice assistant.

Apps like Spotify and Apple Music can also be used as native apps in the PCM without having to connect a smartphone.
"Our product portfolio is younger than ever and highly attractive," CEO Oliver Blume said in a statement. "It offers our customers even more customization options and exclusive experiences."

Each year, "Teacher Appreciation Week" is observed during the month of May - and for one preschool teacher in Washington state, her "appreciation" came in the form of some good luck from the universe. 
A resident of Edmonds, Washington identified only as "J.C." stopped at a Safeway grocery store on May 11 to get coffee with her mother before a day of running errands, Washington's Lottery said in a May 31 press release. 
Edmonds is north of Seattle.

While at the store, J.C. bought a scratch-off lottery ticket at a vending machine, using $10 she'd won from another scratch-off ticket.

Later that night, J.C. was watching TV when she remembered she had not yet scratched off the lottery ticket she purchased, said Washington's Lottery.

"When she saw one of her numbers matched the winning number on the ticket for the $200,000 prize, she was in disbelief," said the lottery in a press release.

"They both were speechless," said Washington's Lottery.

With her big win, J.C. told Washington's Lottery that she plans on buying herself a new car and traveling to Ireland, a place she's always wanted to visit.

Hundreds of thousands of other prizes, ranging from $10 to $500, are also up for grabs.

Hang up the ripped bodices, give Fabio the bad news and cue the lawyers: the Romance Writers of America, a nonprofit devoted to helping romance writers build their careers, is headed to bankruptcy court.
As with so many affairs of the heart, trouble started in a hotel, or more precisely with hotel bills for the organization's flagship annual conference, which the group said it could not pay in its bankruptcy filing on Wednesday in Houston, Texas.
RWA membership has declined sharply due to recent controversies over diversity within the organization and the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented it from holding in-person events in 2020 and 2021, according to court documents.
RED LOBSTER FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY: BLAME FOCUSES ON SHRIMP DEAL
Before 2019, RWA had 10,000 members, but membership has dropped to about 2,000. The organization's declining membership meant that its long-term conference commitments were "threatening RWA's ability to continue to operate," according to its court filings.
The organization estimated that it owes roughly $3 million to the hotels that host its annual writers' conference and about $74,500 in cash to other creditors. It plans to use its bankruptcy to eliminate the debt to the hotels, and instead institute a three-year payment plan that directs all of the organization's disposable income to the hotels and other creditors.  
RWA said in a statement it expects a "swift resolution" to its bankruptcy restructuring, which "will not impact its day-to-day operations" of providing training and other resources to its members.
The organization signed a long-term contract for its flagship annual writers' conference in 2018, locking it in to agreements with Marriott hotels around the U.S. But as membership declined, RWA tried to cancel or renegotiate its now-excessive contracts, with only partial success.
The hotel that hosted RWA's most recent conference has sought more than $700,000 from RWA because it sold fewer rooms than RWA had reserved, and the group expects to lose money on its upcoming 2024 conference in Austin, Texas, as well. RWA also faces a $1 million contract termination demand from the Philadelphia Marriott that is slated to host RWA's 2025 conference.
RWA has been roiled by controversies over diversity in recent years, and it acknowledged that it had "lost the trust of our membership and the romance community" in a 2019 statement.
RWA reconstituted its board, canceled its 2020 awards program and pledged to improve its record on diversity after it suffered backlash for ousting a board member who had criticized other writers' work for containing negative racial stereotypes. The organization also renamed its annual awards program to emphasize its connection to RWA founder Vivian Stephens, a Black editor who championed women of color in the romance writing community.

Those changes failed to prevent further criticism in 2021, when the organization gave an award to a historical romance novel with a protagonist who took part in the 1890 massacre of more than 300 Lakota men, women and children at the Battle of Wounded Knee. RWA rescinded the award.

Shares of Trump Media and Technology Group, the parent of Donald Trump's Truth Social, bounced between gains and losses in early trading on Friday after a jury found the former president guilty on all 34 counts in a criminal hush money trial. 
Trump Media shares are up more than 7% this week. Broader stocks were marginally higher.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump with falsifying business records in the first degree. Trump pleaded not guilty to all counts but was convicted on each.
Trump's company has not yet commented on the developments.

 Several business leaders weighed in following the verdict, including Elon Musk, who denounced it as a stain on the "American legal system" in a post on X.
Ahead of the verdict, reports surfaced that Trump is mulling a White House role for Musk should he win in the fall.

Earlier this week, Trump Media CEO Deven Nunes wrote a letter to Louisiana Office of Financial Institutions Commissioner Scott Jolly, highlighting what the company believes is stock manipulation of its shares. Nunes is asking Jolly to launch a probe.
"I respectfully request that you immediately open an investigation to determine the nature and extent of any illicit activities - and particularly whether the trading in DJT has violated Louisiana Securities Law," Nunes wrote.
TRUMP MEDIA FLAGS NASDAQ ON POSSIBLE MARKET MANIPULATION
This is not the first time Nunes has alleged market manipulation of Trump Media stock. In April, Nunes asked Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman to investigate similar alleged trading patterns. 
Shares of Trump Media have advanced more than 180% this year despite losing money. 
Earlier this month, the company reported a first-quarter operating loss of more than $12 million and revenue of $770,500. Additionally, the company disclosed that its retail shareholder base - smaller Main Street investors - totaled 621,000.

More than 1 million adult bed rails are being recalled in the U.S. and Canada after two reported deaths associated with the product, safety regulators said. 
On Thursday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Medline Industries LP jointly announced that two models of Bed Assist Bar adult portable bed rails are being recalled because they pose a risk of entrapment and asphyxia. 
"When the recalled bed rails are attached to an adult's bed, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the bed rail and the side of the mattress," the notice read. "This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation."
US TELLS OWNERS TO STOP DRIVING OLDER NISSAN VEHICLES OVER AIR BAG CONCERNS
The company received two reports of entrapment deaths tied to the product. The deaths occurred in July 2019 and November 2023, and involved a 76-year-old woman at a senior nursing facility in Iowa and an 87-year-old woman at a residential care facility in South Carolina, according to the recall notice.
The CPSC is urging consumers to "immediately" stop using the bed rails and contact the company for a refund. They are also urged to report any related incidents to the agency. 
PEDIGREE DOG FOOD BAGS RECALLED DUE TO POSSIBLE 'LOOSE METAL PIECES'
The 1.5 million bed rails that are impacted by the recall were sold between July 2009 and March 2024, according to the notice.
They were available through Medline's websites and major online retailers like Amazon and Walmart, CVS and Walgreens.
