CAM'RON EXPLAINS HOW $120K 'IT IS WHAT IT IS' INVESTMENT TURNED INTO $20M DEAL

Cam'ron has shared the story behind his success in sports media by elaborating on his journey from rap to podcasting.

During a discussion panel at Black Enterprise's 2024 Disruptor Summit earlier this month, the Dipset MC looked back on how he kickstarted It Is What It Is in 2023.

"I did three-four episodes by myself," he began. "I actually invited Ma$e to be a guest on the show and he was like, 'Yo man, this is really dope - do you want to go half on it?' And I'm like, 'Yeah, we can go half, let's do it.'

"He didn't even have to put any money up, but he was willing to. I probably did four episodes, maybe five, and they offered me a million dollars and I was like, 'No.' And then we got to probably 10 episodes and it got up to like three million dollars, and I was like, 'Oh, we got something here.'"

He continued: "We actually did 35 episodes, so we did a deal, but I probably spent a $127,000 'cause I just kept shooting and shooting, and Ma$e had this number in his head [...] When it got to like six million dollars, I was like, 'Ma$e we got to- it doesn't make sense to not do the deal.'

"And he had a real number in his head. He's like, 'Cam, we got to [wait],' so we end up doing [a] $20 million deal."

Aside from sports, Killa and Murda go way back as they both came up in Hip Hop during the same era.

Last month, Cam revealed that he has even recorded an entire album with his fellow New York MC that they won't be releasing.

MAY 21, 2024

"Me and Ma$e got an album," he said during an Instagram Live session in late April. "He said we can't put it out! I don't know what it's about. We did six-seven songs. We do the songs and then he say, 'No.' I don't know what Ma$e is saving them for. But we got songs together and not together. I'm just not allowed to play them."

The 48-year-old MC also said that his co-host is sitting on a huge vault of unreleased music, some of which is "real good."

"Ma$e got mad songs. Them shits is hot too. All Ma$e songs is hot," he continued. "I ain't gonna front, he got some real, real, real good songs. What he holding onto them for? I can't answer that. I don't know what Ma$e is holding onto these songs for.

"I asked him, 'Could I play them?' and he told me, 'No.' Maybe they just for him to enjoy. I hear them too though, I enjoy them. Trust me, if I could play this shit Ma$e plays for me, I would.

SWIZZ BEATZ STUNS METRO BOOMIN BY SHOWING OFF HIS OLD ROOM FROM THE '90S: 'ICONIC!'

Swizz Beats has reflected on his younger days as a musician growing up in New York City by sharing a series of photographs from the '90s.

On Monday (May 27), the 45-year-old took to Instagram to give his fans and followers a peek at his formative years with shots of his old room (where he claims to have cooked up DMX's "Ruff Ryders' Anthem"), gear and friends from back then.

"Throwback Monday," he captioned the post. "Just a young man from the BRONX."

A number of people, including his peers, subsequently conveyed how impressed they are by how far he's come over the past three decades.

"Coming from where I'm from -Anthony Hamilton," Fat Joe wrote, while Metro Boomin added: "ICONIC! And inspiring!!!!"

The veteran producer has branched out a great deal over the years. Most recently, he teamed up with his wife Alicia Keys to curate an exhibition made up of work by other artists.

In January, the power couple announced their plan to display their private collection of paintings, sculptures and more at the Brooklyn Museum. 'GIANTS: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys' opened in February and features works by Gordon Parks, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lorna Simpson, Kehinde Wiley and Nina Chanel Abney, among others.

"'Giants' refers to several aspects of the Dean Collection: the renown of legendary artists, the impact of canon-expanding contemporary artists, and the monumental works by such creators as Derrick Adams, Arthur Jafa, and Meleko Mokgosi," the venue's website shared.

"Immense pieces-including the largest ever by Mokgosi-are paired with standouts such as Parks's seminal photographs, Wiley's revolutionary portraits, and Esther Mahlangu's globe-bridging canvases.

"The term also evokes the strength of the bonds between the Deans and the artists they support, and among the artists themselves. Along with examining these links and legacies, the exhibition will encourage 'giant conversations' inspired by the works on view-critiquing society and celebrating Blackness."

The exhibit runs until July 7. Tickets are available here

KANYE WEST'S ANTI-ADIDAS 'MBDTF' VINYL ON SALE FOR EYE-WATERING AMOUNT AT AUCTION

A Kanye West album autographed by the man himself is being auctioned off for a staggering sum of money - thanks to a certain message he sent adidas while signing it.

The item, a vinyl copy of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was autographed by Ye during a visit to Paris in February and features "FUCK ADIDAS" and "YE" scribbled on the front.

Months later, the one-of-one album has hit the auction block courtesy of Moment in Time and will cost the winning bidder a pretty penny, with the seller seeking no less than $500,000.

Check out photos of the vinyl, along with the moment Ye put his explicit stamp on it, below.

While leaving The Ritz hotel in the French capital back with his wife Bianca Censori, the Chicago rap icon was swarmed by a group of fans who began chanting, "Fuck adidas."

West was wearing a full mask so it was impossible to see his reaction, but he appeared to endorse the message when he was asked to sign a vinyl copy of his seminal 2010 album.

After appearing to encourage the crowd to chant louder, he took the fan's copy of the record and signed his name along with "FUCK ADIDAS" on the cover.

At the time, Kanye had been stepping up his campaign against former business partners adidas, slamming them for selling new versions of the 350 shoes which originated under his Yeezy brand.

"Anybody who loves Ye would not buy these fake Yeezys I never made these color ways I'm not getting paid off of them and adidas is suing me," he wrote on Instagram.

"All these celebrities and the public will stand against a T shirt or the color of my hat but when yall see me have my children hidden from me or see an actual Fortune 500 company rape one of your heroes in real life don't nobody say nothing or do nothing."

He added: "As far as the system goes What yall gone do now Take my album down again Freeze my accounts again Threaten people to not work with me again All the new non approved 350's are cooorny."

In a separate video, West said: "Let me explain really clearly what's happening with adidas. 'Cause not only are they putting out fake colorways that are not approved, they're suing me for $250 million and they're also not paying me for the shoes they're putting out that have my name on it.

"And they using contract clauses and 50 years of business experience to rape an artist. One of y'all favorite artists right in front of y'all in broad daylight."

adidas terminated their lucrative Yeezy partnership with Kanye in October 2022 after the rapper made numerous antisemitic remarks, with the sportswear giant also freezing proceeds that were due to be paid to Kanye

ICE CUBE ADMITS HE 'DOESN'T LIKE' WATCHING OTHER RAPPERS BEEF

Ice Cube isn't a fan of watching rappers beef with each other, though he also understands that it's a part of the game.

Last month, before things got intense between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, he joined Canada's E-Talk for a conversation about feuds in Hip Hop. At the time of the interview, K. Dot had already fired the first shot on Metro Boomin and Future's "Like That," following which J. Cole issued then rescinded a response to Dot with "7 Minute Drill."

The Los Angeles native, who famously beefed with his former N.W.A crew back in the day and dropped one of the most scathing disses of all time with "No Vaseline," has matured a lot over the years as he stated that he doesn't like the dangerous route a lot of rap beefs take as they escalate.

"Beefs are volatile. You always have to be careful that a beef doesn't turn into a murder," he said. "Back in the day, you'd do a diss record, but it would stay somewhat in the Hip Hop community. Now, it's all over the world. All walks of life know what's going on. And some people can't really take that kind of humiliation. I don't really like seeing rappers beef.

"I don't think it's necessary to have a great career. But it happens! Hey, it's part of the game and I think when you in a beef, you can't really hold back. It's like being in a fight - you can't really half-punch; you gotta go all the way."

Even less enthusiastic about the beef in question is Questlove.

The Roots drummer sternly criticized the hotly-contested rap battle in an Instagram post earlier this week, going as far as to declare that Hip Hop is "truly dead."

The veteran drummer's issues lie with the way both rappers have conducted themselves over the back-and-forth, dragging each other's family members into the feud by making scandalous and unsubstantiated allegations on their respective diss songs.

"Nobody won the war," he wrote. "This wasn't about skill. This was a wrestling match level mudslinging and takedown by any means necessary - women & children (& actual facts) be damned.

"Same audience wanting blood will soon put up 'rip' posts like they weren't part of the problem. Hip Hop truly is dead."

Challenging both MCs to step their game up morally, Questlove added in the caption: "Here We Are Now...Entertain us?

TRAVIS SCOTT'S ASTROWORLD LAWSUITS HAVE ALL BEEN SETTLED, WITH ONE EXCEPTION

Travis Scott's 2021 Astroworld festival tragedy resulted in 10 wrongful death lawsuits against the rapper and a myriad of companies, but they've almost all been settled.

According to a report published by ABC News on Wednesday (May 8), just one case is currently pending while all others - including one that was set to go to trial this week - have been confidentially settled.

The final lawsuit was filed by the family of 9-year-old Ezra Blount, the youngest person killed at the concert.

Last month, a judge denied the Houston rapper's motion to be dismissed from the Astroworld lawsuits. District Judge Kristen Hawkins issued her ruling without explanation, meaning that the civil suits will be permitted to move forward.

If found liable, Scott and Live Nation will be facing a court-ordered payout of billions of dollars in damages to the victims.

In March, Cactus Jack's attorneys argued that the responsibility for the fans' safety lies with event organizers and the venue's staff.

"Like any other adrenaline-inducing diversion, music festivals must balance exhilaration with safety and security-but that balance is not the job of performing artists, even those involved in promoting and marketing performances," lawyer Daniel Petrocelli wrote.

"Which only makes sense: Performing artists, even those who engage in certain promotional activities, have no inherent expertise or specialized knowledge in concert safety measures, venue security protocols, or site-design."

He continued: "When, during festival planning, concerns arose about the risk of a stampede occurring in the festival site, the Scott defendants supported festival organizers' efforts to eliminate that risk by agreeing to remove certain rides and other attractions at the site. Then, when the Scott defendants were told to end the show after Mr. Scott's guest performer finished performing, they did just that-ending the show as directed."

While Travis remains a part of the legal proceedings, Drake has been dismissed from the plaintiff's claims.

Earlier this year, the rapper's attorneys requested that he have his name removed from the suits while claiming that he was not involved in the even't planning.

In April, NBC News reported that Judge Hawkins approved the request.

Several companies such as Apple Inc. as well as Scott's Cactus Jack Enterprises and LaFlame Enterprises had similar requests denied.

Last year, a grand jury declined to bring criminal charges against the "Sicko Mode" rapper over the tragedy. That decision took place about a month after Houston Police issued a nearly 1,300-page report detailing its investigation

PAPOOSE DEFENDS RAP LYRICS FROM BEING USED IN COURT IN POWERFUL NY STATE CAPITOL ADDRESS

Papoose is among the many Hip Hop figures who are advocating against the use of rap lyrics as evidence in court, and he has now taken his efforts to the New York State Capitol.

During a meeting with local politicians that took place on Tuesday (May 7), the veteran rapper made a case for the AB127 bill that seeks to limit "the admissibility of evidence of a defendant's creative or artistic expression against such defendant in a criminal proceeding."

"America has a problem with violence, not Hip Hop," he argued. "Hip Hop is the only thing that gave us a way out, away from the negativity."

In the caption of an Instagram post about the gathering, he wrote: "Today we visited the capital to fight for change on a very important issue. I used my tracks titled "Law Library" as a reference. In New York, the music industry is a significant contributor to the economy and culture. With over 202,000 jobs created and a substantial $19 billion contribution to the state's GDP, music plays a vital role in New York's prosperity.

"The state boasts a vibrant community of approximately 130,000 songwriters, highlighting the depth of musical talent within its borders. In response to these pressing concerns, nearly a dozen Assembly members, led by Assemblywoman Cruz, have introduced AB127. Passing AB127 would limit the use of a defendant's creative work in a trial, ensuring artists are able to express themselves freely without fear of reprisal from the justice system. A companion bill, SB1738 passed the Senate on March 27.

He added: "AB127 establishes safeguards to ensure music, literature, film, and other works of creative expression
remain protected by the First Amendment. This legislation seeks to establish a systematic framework for
the handling of lyrics in legal proceedings. It does not ban the usage of creative work in criminal
proceedings; instead, it shifts the burden to the prosecutor who must prove the work is relevant and
admissible.

"Researchers and legal scholars have seen this practice apply, almost exclusively, to hip hop and rap. And
while the legislation is not genre specific, it is impossible to ignore the detrimental impact the existing
practice has had on certain Black and Brown artists practicing their craft. By providing clear legal
guidelines on the admissibility of lyrics as evidence, AB127 aims to prevent the unjust weaponization of
creative expression for prosecutorial purposes."

Last year, Fat Joe defended Young Thug by claiming that he's lied in most of the songs he's released throughout his career. During a CNN interview with Gayle King, the Bronx rapper said it's a "travesty" that the Atlanta native's lyrics can be used against him in the ongoing YSL RICO case.

"I've been rapping professionally for 30 years - I've lied in almost 95 percent of my songs," he began. "I'm being honest. I write like I feel that day. I'm just being creative. You couldn't build a jail high enough for the lyrics I've said on songs which are all untrue."

The Terror Squad boss continued: "What I am is a family man, the person who gives back to my community all the time, opens businesses in my community. So the music would never amount to the actual person, Joseph Cartagena. What's even more horrible is that the district attorneys, they know those lyrics ain't real. They know that's creativity. But if it helps their case, they'll use it to put these guys in jail.

"And here, we're having a fun show about it and discussion, but there really is six defendants in Atlanta who might spend the rest of their lives in jail for something that's totally not true. This is very serious. This destroys families."

Soon after, he set the record straight about the above claim that had people questioning his authenticity. In explaining himself, he pointed out that MCs "move off of inspiration," switching between a range of emotions such as anger, love, peace and tranquility.

"I had to say 95 percent of what I say is a lie so that they can understand that it's unfair to try some kids for the rest of their life with shit they might've not done," Joey Crack said. "What you gotta understand is that it's creativity [...] now if I say I use my imagination, my creativity in my music don't mean I ain't live a real fuckin' life in the streets.

FAT JOE JOINS FORCES WITH ZOEY DOLLAZ TO BRING MUCH NEEDED HUMANITARIAN AID TO HAITI

Fat Joe and Zoey Dollaz have teamed up with Food For The Poor to bring some much-needed humanitarian aid to the embattled Haiti.

According to a press release shared with HipHopDX on Thursday (May 2), the partnership will establish a relief fund, which will provide aid and essential supplies to families affected by the country's most recent humanitarian crisis spurred by nearly three years of civil unrest in the island nation.

According to Axios, Prime Minister Ariel Henry stepped down from his position as of April 25, in response to the increasing incidents of violence in the island nation. Henry had assumed power following the assassination of then President Jovenel Mo se in July 2021.

Under his leadership, Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince has seen escalating gang violence that came to a head on March 4, following a prison break at Haiti's National Penitentiary - which, per CNN, facilitated the escape of about 3500 of the facility's 3687 inmates.

The country's leaders declared a state of emergency, which eventually led to Henry's resignation and the slow process of installing a provisional council to work towards stabilizing Port-au-Prince.

At press time, however, the seaport and international airport in the capital remain closed. And while smaller airports in the cities of Cap-Haitien to the north and Les Cayes to the south are open, the import of commercial goods and delivery of humanitarian aid have been severely impacted.

"My heart goes out to all the Haitians that are suffering because of this humanitarian crisis," the Terror Squad leader said, in a statement. "Many of my close friends are Haitian, so we've been watching this tragedy unfold and exploring the most efficient and effective ways to provide meaningful support. All relief items and financial contributions will go directly to Food For The Poor, so they can safely distribute the donations directly to the families in need."

Fat Joe has established an Amazon Wish List of essential items that will be sent directly to Haiti, including baby formula, diapers, and wipes.

In recent years, the Bronx native has established himself as quite the activist.

Last month, he paid tribute to his son while continuing his efforts to raise awareness about neurodivergent children and the conditions they have to actively negotiate.

On April 2, the Terror Squad boss shared a photograph of the World Autism Awareness Day logo along with a throwback photo of his 33-year-old namesake, Joseph Jr.

"WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY Joey this one's for you [blue hearts emojis]," he wrote in the caption.

AL GREEN REACTS TO KENDRICK LAMAR SAMPLING HIM ON '6:16 IN LA' DRAKE DISS

Al Green is sampled in Kendrick Lamar's newest diss to Drake, "6:16 In LA," and it garnered a response from the legend himself.

Released in the early hours of Friday (May 3), the Sounwave and Jack Antonoff-produced track samples Green's 1972 classic, "What a Wonderful Thing Love Is."

Though he kept it simple in his post, Green shared the original song to his Twitter/X page shortly after K. Dot dropped "6:16 In LA."

You can view it below.

Just days after releasing the explosive "Euphoria," Kendrick Lamar dropped "6:16 in LA" - a play on Drake's timestamp song series - on his Instagram page on Friday (May 3).

Rapping over the aforementioned Al Green sample, K. Dot fires off another barrage of shots at the 6 God, claiming that there are Judases among his disciples.

"Conspiracies about cash, dawg, that's not even the leak/ Find the jewels like Kash Doll, I just need you to think/ Are you finally ready to play 'Have you ever?,' let's see/ Have you ever thought that OVO is working for me?" he raps, responding to Drake's claim on "Push Ups" that he was being extorted by his former label boss Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith.

"Fake bully, I hate bullies, you must be a terrible person/ Everyone inside your team is whispering that you deserve it/ Can't Toosie Slide up out of this one, it's just gonna resurface/ Every dog gotta have his day, now live in your purpose."

"It was fun until you started to put money in the streets/ They lost money 'cause they came back with no receipts/ I'm sorry that I live a boring life, I love peace/ But war ready if the world is ready to see you bleed," he spits.

"The Elohim, K. T. W. know you can't sleep/ These images trouble you, know the wires in your circle should puzzle you/ If you was street smart then you woulda caught that your entourage is only to hustle you."

LIL BABY SIGNEE GETS 17 YEARS IN PRISON FOR ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTING TODDLER IN THE HEAD

Lil Baby signee Dirty Tay has received a sentence of 17 years in prison after a shooting in 2022 that left a toddler fighting for his life.

According to court documents obtained by HipHopDX, the aspiring rapper (real name Kentavious Wright) was officially sent to prison on April 26 after he took a plea deal. The charge - originally a capital felony, making him eligible for the death penalty if convicted of the top count - was reduced to a lesser felony, meaning he only has to serve 17 years behind bars.

It is unclear whether Dirty Tay will be eligible for parole before the sentence is up.

Check out the docket below.

Dirty Tay released two albums, Way Bigger on the Low and Too Turnt Up, on Lil Baby's 4PF label in 2020, with his songs "Beast" and "Don't Wanna Do It" racking up over a million streams each on Spotify.

The shooting took place on August 3, 2022, and involved a man and his three-year-old son being shot at while leaving the Off the Hook barbershop in southwest Atlanta.

According to police, the father and son were driving down Peters Street when a Kia did a U-turn and began to follow them. The car pulled up alongside the passenger side at an intersection and multiple shots were fired, resulting in the child being struck in the head.

The father estimated five shots were fired before the suspect drove to a fire station, with three 9mm shell casings being found at the scene of the crime. The child was rushed to the hospital and was stabilized hours after the shooting.

Dirty Tay denied his involvement in the shooting in a post to his Instagram Stories. "I'm innocent the news is not always right don't bash me because of allegations," he wrote.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, police arrested 24-year-old Dirty Tay (real name Kentavious Wright) during a traffic stop on August 19, 2022, and booked him into the Fulton County Jail on a dozen counts.

Rapsody and Erykah Badu have teamed up for "3:AM," an ode to the joys of late night love.

The track, which arrived on Friday (May 3), features both artists paying homage to the people that make them feel best.

Rapsody spits: "You feel like a healer/ I know I'm imperfect/ Tho you make me feel like Jesus/ Or how God sees us/ Not afraid to show my insecurities like Issa," cleverly referring to Issa Rae's TV show Insecure.

She adds: "Everything I hid you always peeped it/ When it's darkest we always attract/ The brightest people/ Baby, you a light/ You shift my whole world to the right/ Nothing left but."

The duo first performed the song together at Badu's 53rd birthday celebrations in Dallas back in February.

The song will be featured on the North Carolina-born rapper's first album in five years, Please Don't Cry.

Rapsody announced the project in March, when she shared its release date, tracklist and cover art.

"May 17th, Please Don't Cry. My fourth studio album," she wrote on Instagram.

Rapsody then offered a hint at the album's concept, describing the journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance that she has embarked on since her last full-length release.

"The last four years have been a beautiful, challenging, exciting, scary, journey back to self," she said. "A becoming. A reintroduction. An unveiling. An unlearning. A knowing. An unplugging. A welcome home. A reality check.

"A love story with the reflection in the mirror. And I love her. She's raw. Imperfect. Real. Goofy. Intelligent. Cool as a cucumber. Patient. Kind. Mad. Emotional. Funny. Quiet. Swear she gangsta. Thoughtful. Grateful. Forgetful. Overwhelmed."

She added: "Once a month she got an attitude. She cares deeply. Sometimes too much. She's a lot of things. She's complex. But, I think that's what makes her special. And I can't wait for you to get to know her. Love [kiss emoji] The Homegirl."
